British authorities has added eleven more countries to its travel alert register regarding the threats of methanol toxicity from contaminated beverages.

This expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol toxicity.

Only recently, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, in response to multiple notable incidents including the tragic loss of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic substance typically utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not intended for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the creation of beverages, reputable manufacturers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the refining procedure.

However in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to notice.

Government Advice for Tourists

Authorities representative Hamish Falconer said that every traveler should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"If you're consuming alcohol in foreign countries, opt for reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.

"If something seems unusual, such as a headache that's much more severe than usual or blurred eyesight – get medical help immediately."
